Ashwarden Tactics

★★★★★ 4.7 Editor rating

Ashwarden Tactics is the kind of mobile RPG I keep going back to. You lead a small band of exiles across a snowbound map, picking fights on a grid and slowly unlocking a surprisingly deep skill tree. Each character leans into a role, but the fun is in mixing them so a frost mage sets up a combo your warrior finishes.

Combat is turn-based and readable. You can see exactly where enemies will move and how much damage you'll take, so losses feel like your mistakes rather than bad luck. The story is told in quiet little scenes between battles, and while it won't win awards, it gave me a reason to care about keeping everyone alive.

My one gripe is the inventory screen, which gets cluttered fast once you have a full party. But the actual fighting is so good that I forgave it within a couple of hours.
